TWO OF BARBADOS’ most noted sons of the soil basked in the glory of regional recognition yesterday.

Sir Courtney Blackman, first governor in 1972 of the Central Bank of Barbados, and businessman Ronald Geoffrey Cave, chairman of Cave Shepherd and Company, were both conferred Honorary Doctor of Law degrees from the University of the West Indies (UWI) during the Cave Hill Campus 2007 graduating ceremony at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

Sir Courtney, himself a UWI graduate, also delivered a congratulatory address to the successful students of the faculties of humanities and education, pure and applied sciences and medical sciences.

Public orator Professor Henry Fraser, in introducing Sir Courtney, said the economist was one of few persons who could combine all three routes to success being born great, achieving greatness and having greatness thrust upon them.

Regarding Cave, Fraser congratulated him for creating a symbol in Bridgetown, that of Cave Shepherd and Company. Cave became chairman in 1975, leading Cave Shepherd to major expansion across Barbados and diversification into tourism and financial services in other parts of the region.
