THE STUDENTS of the Challenor School can now continue to enjoy their existing programmes, thanks to a generous $50 000 donation from Cave Shepherd.
Grantley Taylor, a director of Cave Shepherd, who has had a 30-year long association with the school both as a council and a board member, recently made the presentation to the acting director, June Blackman, on behalf of the company.
The donation is part of the one million dollars pledged by the company to a number of organisations on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
The Challenor School was one of the organisations chosen because the school caters to the physically and mentally challenged and is also in dire need for funding so that it can continue to operate.
The school, which now has a roll of 46 children and caters to some 60 adults, has been in desperate need of financial assistance to allow it to continue to function and offer the many classes and skills that are required.
Blackman explained that the money would be mainly used in the Adult Training Facility where the young adults work and develop life skills such as sewing, cooking, gardening and homecare among others.
The money will also be used to secure resources and equipment and buy materials to keep the classes going including lumber for the woodwork class, fabric for sewing, craft and other materials for food preparation, agriculture and landscaping.
It will also help with the purchase of computers for the adult section.
