HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE flocked to the City yesterday to take part in a day of celebrations and bargains at Cave Shepherd.
One of the high points was the unveiling of the store’s 100th anniversary commemorative plaque. Drums rolled and a horn sounded as Dame Billie Miller, parliamentary representative for the City, and Geoffrey Cave, chairman and grandson of one of the founding board members of Cave Shepherd, unveiled the plaque.
The event, one of many held as part of the month of celebrations for Cave Shepherd, saw staff for the first time in their new uniforms, greeting and mingling with specially invited guests and customers.
Also as part of this special day, the store offered 100 free gifts for each winning entry form, and 25 per cent off storewide. Those in the store made sure they got an early jump on their Christmas shopping while sampling the sweet Farmer’s Choice ham, and children savoured the story-telling and puppet show.
Dame Billie was also presented with a 1911 portrait of Cave Shepherd, and the Caribbean Classics double CD of 100 songs, featuring artistes like John King, Sister Marshall, Richard Stoute, Tony Grazette and Cheryl Hackett, to name a few.
Chief executive officer of the Copyright Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Erica Smith and its chairman, Andre Woodvine, presented Hugh Durant, corporate communications manager at Cave Shepherd, with a plaque to salute the company on its 100th anniversary. It was given as part of the ongoing support of the Barbados music industry as a valued licensee since 1974.
Grantley Taylor, a director and past company secretary, welcomed Vida Gill, widow of Cyril Earl Gill, former Postmaster General of Barbados. She was presented with the First Day Cover of Cave Shepherd’s 100th Anniversary Commemorative Postage Stamps in honour of her late husband. He served on the Cave Shepherd board of directors from 1970 until his death in 1997.
Thanks also went out to Postmaster General Joel Brathwaite and Wendy Nurse for making the commemorative stamps a reality. They were designed by Simone Davis.
Celebrations for the company started with a church service on November 5.
